BELGRADE - Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic's decision to put forward Serbian Progressive Party leader Aleksandar Vucic for prime minister has taken effect by its June 4 publication in the Official Gazette and is set to be submitted to the Serbian parliament.

The explanation of the decision, signed by Nikolic on June 2, states that Vucic possesses the professional and personal qualities required to perform the duty of prime minister and that he has assured the president that he is capable of ensuring that a government is elected.

Vucic's consultations on the new government with officials of the parties that made it to the parliament following the April early elections are expected to begin on Tuesday.

Originally scheduled to start today, the consultations have been postponed as the parliament is yet to be constituted after its session was adjourned on Friday before the election of the speaker, the deputy speakers, the secretary general and the members of the parliamentary working bodies.

Vucic had announced that the government should be formed by June 16.
