President Nikolic, Voutsis: Better future through joint efforts

Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic on Tuesday held a meeting with the Speaker of the Greek Parliament Nikos Voutsis at which they agreed it was only through joint efforts that Balkan countries could achieve a better future for the region and progress for entire Europe.

BELGRADE - Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic on Tuesday held a meeting with the Speaker of the Greek Parliament Nikos Voutsis at which they agreed it was only through joint efforts that Balkan countries could achieve a better future for the region and progress for entire Europe.

Serbia is sincere in its intent to become a full EU member and it appreciates Greece's support for its pursuit of that goal, a statement quoted Nikolic as saying.

Serbia already meets nearly all conditions for admission to the EU, but there are several principles it will not give up on, Nikolic said.

What is significant for Serbian citizens is to transform Serbia into a modern and orderly country and achieve European standards, which makes the actual date of EU accession secondary, he said.

Voutsis said Serbia's support for efforts to resolve the Cyprus issue was vital for Greece.

Nikolic asks for Greece's help over Kosovo UNESCO bid

BELGRADE - Meeting with the Speaker of the Greek Parliament Nikos Voutsis on Tuesday, Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic asked Greece as a friend of Serbia to seriously consider Belgrade's positions on the so-called Kosovo's UNESCO membership bid in case it is reassessed next year, and help Serbia to prevent the initiative from coming to fruition.

Voutsis also discussed the issue at Monday's meeting with Serbian FM Ivica Dacic, who told him Pristina's aspirations to join UNESCO and other international organisations were unacceptable.

Dacic also briefed him on the situation in Kosovo-Metohija, the unsustainable return of internally displaced Serbs and the threat to the Serbian heritage there.
