VS Guard represents Serbia and its honor and pride

BELGRADE - Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic attended on Tuesday a ceremony marking Serbian Armed Forces' (VS) Guard Day and said the Guard represented the VS and Serbia, as well as their honor, pride, ethics and strength.

"I am honored to work with you every day, but it is also an honor to be in the unit with the longest tradition in the VS, one which is special in many ways and nowadays performs special tasks of extreme importance," Nikolic stated.
He pointed out that the Guard was formed on May 6 184 years ago at the order of Prince Milos Obrenovic and added that the unit fought in World War One.
"By successfully performing all its tasks and achieving the current level of operational and functional capabilities, the Guard is an active part of the modern and functional VS. As such, it is the pride of all the members of our military and all our citizens through its special nature and recognisability," he remarked.
The Guard has so far taken an active role in all the reforms of the defense system, he said, adding that a new visual identity for the unit had been designed with the help of the Defense Ministry, and that women were now part of the unit as well.
"An elite unit since its creation, the Guard nowadays represents the level of training, honor, glorious tradition and reputation of the VS while keeping up with modern trends," he noted.
The Serbian National Guard marked the day of its formation May 6 with a ceremonial march at the Dedinje barracks in Belgrade on Tuesday.
The ceremony marking the anniversary of the Serbian National Guard's formation, which took place in Pozarevac in 1830, was attended by Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic.
The ceremony was also attended by Serbian Defence Minister Bratislav Gasic, military officials, former commanders of the unit, representatives of religious communities and numerous guests, including Belgrade Mayor Sinisa Mali.
